A pilot program appears to be taking off as a high school program where students earn college credit is set to expand. Our C.J. Spang has the details.

MALTA, N.Y. -- Education today for the workforce of tomorrow. That's the slogan for the Clean Technologies and Sustainable Industries program at the TEC-SMART facility in Malta.

"It's a really good opportunity," said Brendon Wormley, a junior student from Saratoga Springs High School. "You get to meet new people. It's a different experience than high school."

Ballston Spa Central School District and Hudson Valley Community College began the collaborative program this year that allows high school students to earn college credit.

"They also participate in a trans-disciplinary program for the high school level," said Diane Irwin, the K-12 Science Coordinator at Ballston Spa. "Which really means they're learning content for English, math and science by applying it to real-world applications."

Students here say, if you want a challenge, this is the program for you.

"When you come in here, you need to be ready for college," said Brian Helwig, a junior student from Ballston Spa High School. "It's not high school anymore. You've got that one step over and you need to learn that it's a lot harder than it has been and it will continue to get harder."

25 juniors and seniors from Ballston Spa and Saratoga Springs High Schools are currently participating, but next year the program will increase to about 100 students from all over the Capital Region.

"This is a great opportunity," Wormley said. "You learn new things. I'm definitely better off now than I was if I was at school all day because just the way you learn here. It's different. It's more real life."

If you're interested in learning more about the program, there will be an informational meeting March 6th from 6:30-8:30 pm at the TEC-SMART facility. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
