Unlike her close Republican primary victory of Senator Roy McDonald in September, Kathy Marchione won Tuesday night's 43rd Senate District race over Democrat Robin Andrews by a wide margin. YNN's Matt Hunter reports from Saratoga Springs.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- “My friends, thanks to all of you, we pulled it off!”
Exactly two hours after the polls closed in New York, Republican Kathy Marchione declared victory in the 43rd Senate District Race. By then, the longtime Saratoga County Clerk had a more than 10,000 vote lead over Democratic opponent Robin Andrews.
“We were excited the polls seemed to be right,” said Marchione, referencing last week’s Siena College poll that gave her a 15-point advantage over Andrews. “We were hoping that they were and we’re very thrilled about the margin of victory.”
For Andrews, a much lesser known figure in the Capital Region’s political scene, the result didn’t come as an altogether shock, but was no less disappointing for the Claverack Town Supervisor.
"We have Columbia County. Which it looks like I've been very strong in," said Andrews, who spent the evening in Philmont with supporters. "It shows the people who knew me, voted for me and there were thousands and thousands who voted for me, so I'm grateful for that.”
While both candidates rarely addressed it during the race, same sex marriage was a key issue in the campaign.
In September’s GOP primary, Marchione, who opposes same sex marriage, narrowly defeated incumbent Roy McDonald, one of four Senate Republicans who voted in favor of the Marriage Equality Act last year.
“This was, not for me, an anti-gay vote by any means,” Marchione said after addressing supporters Tuesday night. “For me it was a vote for traditional marriage; one man, one woman.”
With victory behind her, Marchione is now set to join a legislative body almost evenly matched between Democrats and Republicans, a challenge she says she’s ready for.
“There will be people who will say that solving the problems is hopeless or impossible and all I have to say to them is ‘let’s get to work,'” Marchione said.
After dramatically knocking off incumbent Roy McDonald in the republican primary, Kathy Marchione marches on in the 43rd Senate District. She spoke to supporters in Saratoga Springs.
