LATHAM, N.Y. -- Colonie police are investigating a suspicious incident that was reported on Laura Drive in Latham on Monday.
Police said an eight-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl were in front of their home around 1 p.m. when a vehicle pulled up and the driver asked them to get in the car. The children ran inside and told their mother, who called police.
While the responding officers did not locate the vehicle, a witness did see a car matching the description leaving the area and heading west on Troy-Schenectady Road.
"We have the two kids who see the car and he has that very brief conversation with them, asking them to get in the car. And then we also have another witness who sees it leaving the neighborhood about the same time. Both of the kids were interviewed, they both had very similar stories. They got a very good description of the vehicle, as well as the person operating the vehicle," said Colonie Police Lieutenant Robert Winn.
The vehicle is described as a newer model four-door Toyota Camry with white and blue New York license plates. The Camry symbol and name on the back of the vehicle was gold colored.
The driver is described as a white male in his 40s with a round face, black beard and mustache. He was wearing what appeared to be a top hat and black framed glasses with orange lenses.
Winn said the department is taking this investigation seriously.
"This right now, we have no other reason not to. This is certainly a very troubling incident. We don't know what the intent of this individual was. Fortunately, all he did was make the verbal request, he did not try to get out of the vehicle. He had no physical contact with the kids. But until we actually locate the person and determine what his motive was, we certainly are taking it very seriously, yes," Winn said.
Anyone who has any information or recognizes the suspect and the car is urged Colonie Police at 783-2744 and Winn said if someone thinks he is in their neighborhood currently, call 911.
