The Burnt Hills Spartans arrived home Friday evening after taking home the Class A state football title. In their third title match up with Sweet Home, Burnt Hills finally broke through, taking a commanding 26 to nothing lead by half time. The Spartans went onto win 40 to 20, bringing home the school's first football state title ever. Our Maria Valvanis was in Glenville, where a very excited school community was on hand to welcome home the newly minted state champs.

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- Back in Glenville, the celebrations were already getting started Friday night. Fire trucks, police cars and dozens of team supporters were on hand to welcome back the new state champs.

The Burnt Hills football team received a warm welcome back to the Capital Region after their huge win.

All of the fans who say they have waited patiently for a state title seem to agree on one thing: It's a great day to be a Spartan.

"It's amazing. I'm so proud of these boys and this program. Good for Coach Shell. It's something that 29 seniors put as a goal of theirs and to achieve it just a dream come true. To be the first group of seniors to bring home a state championship is just an amazing feeling,” said Peggy McDonnell.

"It just feels so great to do this for the community. This is not just for the football team, it's for so many people. This is a community win, it feels phenomenal," said Dan Maynard.

"You always want to get to this point if you can and we've come up short a few times, but tonight is pretty special. We'll remember this for a long time," said Coach Matt Schell.

The last Section II school to win a state title in football was Amsterdam back in 2005.

This is actually the second state championship for Burnt Hills this week. The girls volleyball took home their title just days ago.
