ALBANY, N.Y. -- The public got a chance to weigh in on a possible plan to turn St. Joseph's Church in Albany into a brewery.

The owner of Raven's Head Brewing has applied for a zoning variance that would allow the business to move a brewery into the old church at the Ten Broeck Triangle. Some people who live in that area, though, say a brewery would have a negative effect on the quality of life, while others say a brewery would be a great option for the building.

One person said, “I like where I live. I like my neighbors. This would be a disfavor to all of us and it also would bring the value of our homes down because of this brewery. I do agree something should go on there, but not that.”

“You will have people who are paid to be there to maintain the quality and safety of their business, which extends to the neighborhood around it. That's eyes on the neighborhood,” said another.

The building is currently owned by the Historic Albany Foundation, which has supported finding another use for it.

The Albany common council cannot act on any possible plan until other submissions are made and reviewed by the public.
