HUNTER, N.Y. -- Nine air compressors were hard at work at Hunter Mountain.

"A little air, a little water. And that's the component to make snow. As long as Mother Nature cooperates," said Hunter Mountain Snow Making Operations Manager Bruce Transue.

And Saturday, she did. In addition to providing a little bit of the natural stuff, Mother Nature created cold conditions, enough to cover 16 of the mountain's nearly 60 trails.

"Starting last night and on, we've got about two weeks straight of great snowmaking weather. So our guns are out there, our arsenal is ready to go. And as you can see from behind me, we're rocking and rolling," said Gerry Tschinkel, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Hunter Mountain.

"Rocking and rolling" just in time for the Christmas holiday. The weather was cooperating at nearby Windham, too.

"Winter's happening just at the right time. Christmas, the whole holiday period is obviously important for us. So this couldn't happen at a better time. We've got the cold, we've got snow coming. And we're up and running at this point," said Windham Mountain General Manager Chip Seamans.

Lifts there are taking skiers and snowboarders to 12 of the Mountain's trails. But Seamans said that number will 'change fast.'

"Yeah, that will change tomorrow, the next day. We look in terms of acres as well and number of lifts to kind of spread people out and provide a better experience," he said.

Staff at both mountains expect to be open through the beginning of April. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
