Across the Hudson Valley, people are gearing up for the first major snow storm of the season. Our Eva McKend has more on the preparation.

HUDSON VALLEY, N.Y. -- After last year’s mild winter, the forecast of several inches of snow, sleet and freezing rain has Hudson Valley officials hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.

"We have plenty of salt. Our over time budget has not been used for snow plowing operation because of the mild weather that we’ve been having. We’ve been lucky so far, but the way it looks, we are going to be paying for it tonight and tomorrow," said Middletown Public Works Commissioner Jacob Tawil.

Across the Hudson Valley and throughout the state, the largest concern is how the weather will impact commuters.

"We want to remind drivers to drive carefully out there. Texting and talking on the phone is obviously illegal, but it’s all the more dangerous in these kind of conditions," said New York State Department of Transportation Spokesman Bryan Viggiani.

With the winter storm warning in place, officials say the best thing to do is to stay off the roads if possible.

"Please stay off the road as much as possible. If you really need to go out, then go out but be very careful. The roads will be slippery especially if we get hit with freezing rain," added Tawil.

Several cities, towns and villages declared snow emergencies Wednesday afternoon. Sullivan County officials closed county offices at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The message to people across the region is to make safety a priority.
