ALBANY, N.Y. -- An 11-member commission formed to find ways to make Albany County government more effective and efficient is meeting for the first time tonight.

County Executive Dan McCoy is calling for term limits for his office; he also wants to downsize the legislature.

McCoy says Albany County has the biggest legislature in the state with 39 members which serve about 304,000 people. In comparison, he says Erie County in western New York has 11 officials representing 900,000 people.

McCoy says shrinking the legislature would not only make county government more efficient, but it would also save taxpayers money.

McCoy said, "And I can't call on that without saying, hey, look, let's look at term limits for the County Executive also. Everything should be on the table because if I want to be a leader and I am that leader, everything has to be on the table to be looked at for the 21st century."

Tonight's meeting is taking place at the County Office Building in downtown Albany.
