Two teens are charged with murder for the stabbing death of 21-year-old Takim Smith. The Troy man died after he was stabbed at the Corliss Park Apartments Monday night. YNN's Megan Cruz reports.
TROY, N.Y. -- "He went to see his son; this is ridiculous!"
Relatives of Takim Smith are beside themselves after seeing the two teenagers police say stabbed their cousin to death.
"He went to see his son and go to work. But he never made it to work because of some guys," said one cousin. "They grew up together!"
Witness testimonies led police to 16-year-old Ahziarh Carter and 17-year-old Keith Ferguson. The teens were arrested early Tuesday morning for the Monday night murder at 1906 Corliss Park.
While unharmed, Smith's baby boy was in the apartment at the time of the stabbing.
Family members say one of the teens was the son of Takim's mom's friend.
"Describing some of what the officers that were in there said, it was a very horrific scene," said Deputy Chief Richard McAvoy of the Troy Police Department. "A very bloody scene."
"That victim had very obvious and visible trauma to the torso and neck," said Troy Police Captain John Cooney.
The 21-year-old was brought to St. Mary's Hospital where he later died.
The teens were arraigned Tuesday, charged with second-degree murder.
"A robbery did take place at the time of the fatal event, however the motive for the robbery and the intent as far as what items the defendants were trying to procure at this point we're not commenting on," said Cooney.
Smith's grandfather said his grandson had recently come into some money.
"He just got a settlement - thousands for lead poisoning - so obviously it was a robbery," said Anthony Smith.
Smith's family says the stabbing was senseless.
"He was a good kid, an excellent kid. Never did wrong by nobody. Never been arrested, never had dealings with the police. He went to work and school and took care of his kids," said a cousin.
Carter and Ferguson have both pleaded not guilty to the charges. They've been sent back to Rensselaer County Jail, but will be back in court Friday.
This is the first homicide this year for the City of Troy.
