SELKIRK, N.Y. -- A fire breaks out Sunday afternoon on Old Quarry Road in Selkirk.

Five agencies responded to original reports of smoke at the home. When crews arrived, they saw active power lines down in front of the house.

Since there was no hydrant nearby, fire crews had to pump water from the creek and use tank trucks. Crews had help fighting the fire, but they said the weather conditions didn't help.

Selkirk Fire Department Chief Bill Asprion said, “The fire was whipped by the wind. The wind really played a role here today of cause the cold played a role as well. It makes it very difficult to fight a fire of this magnitude with the wind blowing the way it was. We're getting 30 to 40 mph winds here. So, it's made it very, very difficult.”

Firefighters said no one was home at the time of the fire, but that the home is a total loss.
Asprion said they're still looking into exactly what started the fire. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
