At least one man is homeless after a fire tore through his Montgomery County home. As YNN's Maria Valvanis explains, frigid temperatures made putting that fire out a difficult task for fire crews.

FLORIDA, N.Y. -- Town of Glen Assistant Fire Chief Rick Denton said, “The cold is hindering our attack.”

Crews were called to 611 Langley Road around 6:30 a.m. Monday.

“We got on scene, the house was fully involved. We don't exactly know what started it yet,” said Town of Florida Fire Chief Steve Anderson.

With temperatures only in the teens and strong wind gusts making it feel even colder, officials say this fire was extra difficult to fight.

Chief Anderson said, “Trucks are freezing up, tankers are freezing up, so it's real tough with the cold weather and wind.”

“We're using hot water to thaw the valves out just so we can open them to fill the trucks from the hydrant,” said Assistant Chief Denton.

Seven companies were called to the scene and three were put on standby, so that when truck valves froze up, others could take over the job without losing any time.

Denton said, “They have to go thaw out a while in something warm so it'd take a couple hours.”

It's unclear how many people lived in the home, but officials say everyone got out safely. However in an attempt to save a car, it ended up in this ditch.

“The homeowner went to bring it out and went off the side of the road with it,” said Chief Anderson.

The home was a complete loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
